Top heritage sites in Madhya Pradesh

Hey guys its been long since i posted something was really busy with xams and stuff…

nevertheless i would like to post somethng about my beautiful state and its natural heritage which has its most important roots in the history of India

welcome to the heart of India , Madhya Pradesh, land of ancient art,  architecture, official abode of maharajas and their majestic palace.

being born and bred in one of the beautiful cities of MP…my first article would be about the various beautiful heritage sites in india.
 
Madhya Pradesh has the most important roots in history with many forts and ancient sculptures which are atleast 2000 yrs old.
Madhya Pradesh is a must-see state of India, brimming with startling, thought-provoking and, ultimately, unforgettable attractions.
 
 
MONUMENTAL HERITAGE

The first thought that comes to mind when one thinks about Madhya Pradesh is the Khajuraho group of temple. Monumental heritages in Madhya Pradesh are so beautiful, charming and ecstatic that it pulls tourists from across the world to visit here. From the erotic sculptures of Khajuraho to the great Stupas at Sanchi, there are many ancient ruins and architectural marvel within the boundary of Madhya Pradesh.

SANCHI STUPA  – the Buddhist vihara at Sanchi, famous for its Great Stupa is located at Sanchi Town in Raisen District of the state of Madhya Pradesh, India, it is 46 km north-east of Bhopal.

KHAJURAHO – the Khajuraho Group of Monuments is a group of Hindu and Jain temples in Madhya Pradesh, India, about 175 kilometres (109 mi) southeast of Jhansi. They are one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India. The temples are famous for theirnagara-style architectural symbolism and their erotic sculptures.

the Khajuraho group of temples were built together but were dedicated to two religions—namely Hinduism and Jainism—suggesting a tradition of acceptance and respect for diverse religious views among Hindus and Jains

ORCHHA – Orchha (or Urchha) is a town in Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh state, India. The town was established by Rudra Pratap Singh some time after 1501, as the seat of an eponymous former princely state of central India, in the Bundelkhand region. Orchha lies on the Betwa River, 80 km from Tikamgarh & 15 km from Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh. was founded by bundela rajput chief RUDRA PRATAP SINGH..who later on became the king of orchha

Caves in Madhya Pradesh:

If there is any place in Madhya Pradesh that hides the beauty and splendour of nature, then it would be caves. The deep and dark world of caves is fascinating. Caves of Madhya Pradesh are a rich amalgamation of history, spirituality, mystery and adventure exploration.Famous Caves in Madhya Pradesh:

 Bhimbetka Caves in Bhojpur Raisen– The Bhimbetka rock shelters are an archaeological site of the Paleolithic, exhibiting the earliest traces of human life on the Indian subcontinent, and thus the beginning of the South Asian Stone Age. It is located in the Raisen District in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, near Abdullaganj town and inside the Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary,The name Bhimbetka  is associated with Bhima, a hero-deity of the epic Mahabharata.The word Bhimbetka is said to derive from Bhimbaithka , meaning “sitting place of Bhima”.

 Bhartrihari Caves in Ujjain,- Bhartrihari caves of Madhya Pradesh stand proudly on the bank of the Shipra River, near the revered Gadkalika Temple of Ujjain. Named after the famous sage ‘Bhatrihari’, the caves stand as testimony to the traditional wealth of India. Today, these caves are popular amongst tourists visiting Madhya Pradesh for their historical charm. The pellucid waters of Shipra cascades near the caves and add to the beauty of the place. 

 Udayagiri Caves in Vidisha, – The Udayagiri Caves feature some of the oldest Hindu images and cave temples in India. They are located near the city of Vidisha, northeast of Bhopal in the state of Madhya Pradesh

Forts in Madhya Pradesh

Scattered ruins on the towering hills to the restored masterpieces-Forts of Madhya Pradesh are incredible sites to look at and a perfect venue to go for a heritage walk. Castles, fort and fortress of Madhya Pradesh are epitomes of the rulers struggle to conquer the state. They are the witness of the bloodbath the kingdom has gone through to save its people. These are the art from the past and depicts about the cultural history of the state.

 

Famous forts in Madhya Pradesh


Madan mahal fort – Madan Mahal is a sub urban area of Jabalpur famous for the historical Durgavati fort. The area also has a railway station named Madan Mahal.

Situated atop a hill in Jabalpur town is a small but enchanting fort of the Gond rulers. It was more of a manned post on vigil for invaders now enveloped in shroud of history. The fort dates back to 11th century AD. The fort is well associated with Rani Durgavati the Gond Queen and her son Madan Singh. Rani Durgavati eventually died fighting the Moguls and is hailed as a martyr in Indian history. She also built numerous temples and tanks scattered around Jabalpur chiefly around her Garha principality.

The Gond rulers reigned over Jabalpur, Mandla and surrounding regions. Madan Mahal is one such fort built by them. Though not exactly an architectural marvel, the little fort is characterized by intrigue of ancient monuments in India

The monument is situated at a height of about five hundred meters on the hill of same name.The Balancing Rock is a huge stone balanced on the tip of another. It is a geological wonder on the way to the fort.

Bandhavgarh Fort – The Bandhavgarh Fort is situated in Bandhavgarh in Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is located on the Bandhavgarh hill,  at the centre of the Bandhavgarh National Park. It is a surrounded by a large number of smaller hills separated by gently sloping valleys. These valleys end in small, swampy meadows, locally known as ‘bohera’. The fort is also home to many of the endangered species of Vulture in India
 
Gwalior Fort- Gwalior Fort- Gwalior Qila is an 8th-century hill fort near Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, central India. The fort consists of a defensive structure and two main palaces, Gurjari Mahal and Man Mandir, built by Man Singh Tomar. The fort has been controlled by a number of different rulers in its history. The Gurjari Mahal palace was built for Queen Mrignayani. It is now an archaeological museum. The oldest record of “zero” in the world was found in a small temple, which is located on the way to the top. The inscription is around 1500 years old.

Interesting Facts

  1. Overall, there are three UNESCO world heritage sites in Madhya Pradesh- Buddhist Monuments at Sanchi, Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka and Khajuraho Group of Monuments.
  2. Some of the oldest Buddhist relics are spotted in Sanchi. The Stupa was built in the year 262 AD by King Ashok.
